How Much Does 1 Litre of Honey Weigh? Honey Weight & Volume Converter

How Much Does 1 Litre of Honey Weigh? Honey Weight & Volume Converter

One litre of honey weighs roughly 1.4 kg. For practical calculations, a useful reference value is about 1.42 kg per litre. In the opposite direction, 1 kg of honey occupies about 0.70 litres, or approximately 704 mL.

Honey is a natural product, so 1.42 kg/L is a practical conversion value rather than a fixed constant for every batch. Moisture content is one of the main reasons density varies.

1 L ≈ 1.42 kgpractical volume-to-weight conversion
1 kg ≈ 704 mLpractical weight-to-volume conversion
500 mL ≈ 710 gusing 1.42 g/mL as the working density
1 tbsp ≈ 21 gfor a 15 mL metric tablespoon

This calculator uses 1.42 kg/L as a practical reference density for ordinary kitchen and packaging calculations.

Results are approximate. Exact density varies with moisture content, temperature and the individual batch.

Why is honey heavier than water?

A litre measures volume, while a kilogram measures mass. Honey contains a high concentration of dissolved sugars and relatively little water, so more mass is packed into the same volume than in water.

The FAO reference table for honey at 20°C shows how moisture affects specific gravity: about 1.424 at 17% water, 1.417 at 18%, 1.410 at 19% and 1.403 at 20%. This is why 1.42 kg/L is a useful household reference.

How many litres is 1 kg of honey?

1 kg ÷ 1.42 kg/L ≈ 0.704 L ≈ 704 mL

One kilogram of honey does not fill a one-litre container. Treating kilograms and litres as interchangeable is one of the most common conversion mistakes.

How much does 900 mL of honey weigh?

At 1.42 g/mL, 900 mL of honey weighs about 1.28 kg. But jar capacity and declared net weight are different things. A jar described as 900 mL does not have to contain a full 900 mL of honey.

When comparing honey products, use the declared net weight, not only the apparent size of the glass jar.

Does honey variety change density?

Not in a simple fixed way. It would be misleading to say that one botanical variety always has one exact density. Moisture content of the actual batch is a major factor.

A real product example: see ApiMiodek coniferous honeydew honey. For buying decisions, use the declared net weight shown on the product page rather than estimating quantity from jar dimensions.

Drier honey is denser. EU compositional rules generally set a maximum moisture content of 20% for honey, with specified exceptions.

Does crystallised honey weigh differently?

Crystallisation does not add or remove honey from a closed jar. What changes is structure and texture. Volume measurements become less reliable because crystallised honey can leave small air gaps, so weighing is usually better.

For more practical explanations, see our guide to facts and myths about honey.

Can honey density prove authenticity?

No. Density alone cannot prove that honey is genuine, identify its floral origin or detect every possible form of adulteration. Popular home tests based on dripping, water behaviour or jar weight are not laboratory authentication methods.

FAQ — honey weight and volume

How much does 1 litre of honey weigh?

Usually about 1.4–1.43 kg. A useful everyday reference is 1.42 kg/L.

How many litres is 1 kg of honey?

About 0.70 L, or roughly 704 mL.

How many mL is 1 kg of honey?

About 704 mL when using 1.42 kg/L.

How much does 500 mL of honey weigh?

About 710 g.

How much does 900 mL of honey weigh?

About 1.28 kg if the measured honey volume is actually 900 mL.

How much does a tablespoon of honey weigh?

A 15 mL metric tablespoon contains about 21 g.

Is 1 kg of honey the same as 1 litre?

No. One kilogram of honey occupies only about 0.70 litres.

Can density prove honey authenticity?

No. Density alone is not an authentication test.

The two conversions worth remembering

1 litre honey ≈ 1.42 kg

1 kg honey ≈ 0.70 L ≈ 704 mL

These are practical values for typical honey around room temperature. Professional measurements should use the actual properties of the batch.
