How should honey be stored in summer and winter?
A stable temperature, darkness, dryness and a tightly closed jar are the key points.
The best place
- a closed cupboard or pantry,
- away from cookers, ovens and radiators,
- out of direct sunlight,
- in a dry place with limited temperature changes.
In summer
Do not leave honey on a sunny windowsill or in a hot car. During warm weather, choose the coolest cupboard available. Refrigeration is normally unnecessary and may speed up crystallisation in some varieties.
In winter
Keep the jar away from radiators, fireplaces and ovens. Excess heat may affect aroma and texture.
Using the jar
Always use a clean, dry spoon and close the jar tightly after use. Honey readily absorbs moisture and surrounding odours.
FAQ
Should honey be refrigerated?
No. A dry, dark and cool place is normally enough.
Can honey be kept in the kitchen?
Yes, provided it is away from heat, steam and sunlight.
What does a change in texture mean?
In most cases it is natural crystallisation.
